Columbia City, Indiana is the seat of Whitley County. It is located about 25 miles northwest of Fort Wayne on US 30 and has a population of about 8,000.

The Whitley County Courthouse was designed by Brentwood S. Tolan, a Fort Wayne architect who also designed the Allen County Courthouse.

J.C. Johnson, designer of the old Whitley County Jail, was a Fremont, Ohio, carpenter who taught himself architecture. He also designed courthouses in Randolph County (Winchester) and Adams County (Decatur).

Although altered, this building looks like it's probably quite old.
