'It would be awesome': A big change is possible for 'endangered' Evansville building

One of Evansville's tallest buildings appears on this year's list of "most endangered" properties in the state, published by Indiana Landmarks. But there could be plans for its future.

The 10-story Hulman Building & Garage on Northwest Fourth Street dates to 1929. It formerly housed Vectren and Commerce Bank. Today, aside from a barber shop and clothing store on the ground floor, the building is empty and needs substantial renovation.

The Art Deco-style skyscraper's future is uncertain, but Evansville-based broker Stacy Stevens said she's communicating with an out-of-town company that's showing interest in making it into a hotel.

Developer turning historic Evansville building into affordable housing


A historic building, facing major upgrades. A contractor out of Brownsburg, Indiana hopes to renovate the old Karges Furniture building and turn it into 150 apartments.

Kelley Coures says the historic building used to be a staple of Evansville's grip on the furniture industry.

"We were the furniture manufacturer of the county, and Karges was the upscale manufacturer," says Coures. "If all the furniture in your house came from Karges you were fairly wealthy."

Karges moved out of the building in 2014, and it's sat vacant ever since. Coures says Evansville has a housing issue, because most of the rentable homes and apartments are full.

$74M Hotel, Condominium and Entertainment Development Announced in the Evansville Region

Heavenly Hands Property Services, Inc., along with Renco-USA, both of Jupiter, Florida, in conjunction with Desimone Consulting Engineering of Miami, Florida, Boyatt Design of Blue Ridge, Georgia, The Center for Institutional  Finance of Daytona Beach, Florida and NASG Solutions of St. Paul, Minnesota, are pleased to announce their joint collaboration to bring The EDGE Development to fruition in the Evansville, Indiana region.

The EDGE, a $74 million development built by local labor, creating over 200 construction jobs, 100 permanent jobs once fully operational, and regional economic growth, will provide a significant boost to the local economy in and around Boonville, Indiana.

The EDGE is the result of a multi-year effort and vision by Boonville Mayor Charlie Wyatt to attract a hotel and continued economic development to the Boonville area.  The EDGE development is comprised of a multi-faceted vision and is expected to include a 75,000 square foot state-of-the-art Event Center, 140 key hotel, multiple retail stores, restaurants, fire training center, condominiums for 65 and over, condominiums for veterans, and an entertainment district.  The district will also be home to a bowling alley, mini golf, batting cages, air soft range, axe throwing, indoor karting, amphitheater, and more.   It is a green project designed to generate revenue, education and training as well as hosting conventions and events. The design of Phase One of this project, including the main hotel and convention center, is already in progress with Anthony Boyatt, principal, at Boyatt Design.

Evansville ready for READI 2.0 project pitches

As regions across Indiana gear up for another allotment of transformative state dollars, the Evansville Regional Economic Partnership has released a survey calling for any capital or infrastructure projects that could spur new local growth in population, wages and health outcomes.

The second round of the Regional Economic Acceleration and Development Initiative, or READI 2.0, will provide another $500 million in grants to support projects focused on population growth and quality of life.

The Evansville region, which includes Warrick, Vanderburgh and Posey counties, was one of five to receive the full $50 million from READI 1.0, which supported over 20 projects, including riverfront upgrades, workforce housing and green space.

Great News, Roberts Park is finally getting stuff down to it after 10-12 years of failed planning. Saw they started construction the last couple of weeks.
