Chamber: Indiana not improving as quickly as other states

A new report from the Indiana Chamber of Commerce says Indiana is making good progress toward its economic goals, but that progress isn't coming fast enough to compete with other states.

The chamber on Tuesday released its initial Indiana Prosperity 2035 Report Card, which aims to serve as a baseline for the nearly three dozen goals outlined in its visioning plan of the same name that was unveiled in August.

"We have more of the important metrics where we're showing improvement and making progress, but in many of those areas, we're not improving as fast as other states," Chamber CEO Kevin Brinegar said in a call with reporters. "And that's a concern, because he while we're improving in an absolute sense, in many of these areas, that's not fast enough, and we're falling behind."

Indiana courting two advanced manufacturing projects valued at $7.2B

Officials from the Indiana Economic Development Corp. will appear before a committee of state lawmakers and the state budget director Tuesday to ask for approval to spend $180 million to lure a pair of multi-billion dollar advanced manufacturing projects to Indiana.

The IEDC is requesting $100 million in performance-based incentive grants for a company that plans to invest around $4.1 billion in an advanced manufacturing facility that would result in 2,700 jobs, according to the Dec. 19 agenda for the State Budget Committee. The agency also is asking for $80 million in incentives for a company that plans to put $3.1 billion into a facility that would create 800 new jobs, the agenda reads.

Critical details about the projects, including the names of the companies behind them, where they would be located and whether or not the two developments are related, were not disclosed in the public agenda.

NHanced Semiconductors primed to create 250 jobs in Bloomington

Bloomington will soon be home to a new employer and industry, filling part of a gap in the local economy after Chicago-based NHanced Semiconductors announced a $152 million investment into a Cook Medical facility, which will result in at least 250 high-wage jobs.

The company will turn the mostly vacant Cook property, located at 301 N. Curry Pike, into a microelectronics manufacturing and packaging facility. It will lease the building from Cook.

The Bloomington project meets the needs of NHanced's rapid growth. Founder and President Bob Patti estimates the company will grow 350-to-400% within the next year as the semiconductor industry increases its focus on innovation and specialty production.
