RH unveils its 'hospitality experience' at the previously private DeHaan estate

Gary Friedman, chair and CEO of home furnishings retailer RH, has a handful of suggestions for people planning to visit his company's new store in Indianapolis.

First things first, though: "Store" falls short as a description for what the company has named RH Indianapolis, The Gallery at the DeHaan Estate.

The setting is a 42,000-square-foot mansion that has been seen and visited by no more than a sliver of society since its construction behind high walls 16 years ago.

Beginning with opening day on Friday, everyone will have a chance to check out the residence philanthropist Christel DeHaan built along the White River west of Butler University and northeast of Newfields art museum and gardens.

Indy's retail real estate market is bouncing back after pandemic

Indianapolis-area brokers are bullish on the future of the local retail sector as occupancy rates grow in the aftermath of the pandemic and demand for space outstrips supply in some suburbs.

The industry's inventory has been generally stable in the wake of the pandemic. In fact, retail stock has increased slightly from 46.3 million square feet in the first quarter of 2020 to just over 46.6 million during the same time frame this year, according to data from the Indianapolis office of Chicago-based brokerage Cushman & Wakefield.

The figures account for shopping centers only; they do not include mixed-use developments, retail outlots or stand-alone box stores.

Gyms can sprawl as much as grocery stores

Nordstrom Rack store planned at Noblesville's Hamilton Town Center

Seattle-based Nordstrom Inc. plans to open a Nordstrom Rack store next year in Noblesville at the Hamilton Town Center shopping center.

The 25,000-square-foot store will open in the fall of 2024, according to the company. Hamilton Town Center, located at Interstate 69 and Campus Parkway, is co-owned and managed by Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group.

"We're excited to grow our footprint in the region and introduce new customers to the Nordstrom experience," Gemma Lionello, president of Nordstrom Rack Stores, said in written remarks.

West Elm, Simply Amish stores on the move along north-side corridor

Home furnishings retailers West Elm and Simply Amish recently exited longtime north-side Indianapolis locations with plans for new stores along the 86th/82nd Street corridor.

West Elm, a subsidiary of San Francisco-based Williams-Sonoma Inc. that carries contemporary furniture and housewares, closed its only Indiana store earlier this month at the Fashion Mall at Keystone.

A new West Elm store is scheduled to open April 26 at the Nora Plaza retail center, 1340 E. 86th St., a company spokesperson said. The 12,885-square-foot store will occupy the former sites of Goodman's Shoes and Lakeshore Learning educational supply store.
