Broad Ripple Avenue to reopen after construction project

After nearly five months of construction and redesigning, Broad Ripple Avenue is set to reopen to traffic Friday.

The Broad Ripple Village Association said the exact timing isn't firm, but anticipates the road will reopen at or before 3 p.m.

Broad Ripple Avenue from Winthrop Avenue to Guilford Avenue was closed for 100 days during the project.

Broad Ripple Village said it is not scheduled to be fully complete until the end of 2023.

Groundbreaking set for Broad Ripple mixed-use project

Officials are scheduled to break ground Thursday afternoon on a more than $70 million mixed-use development in the Broad Ripple neighborhood in Indianapolis.

Known as Versa, the project will include more than 230 apartments, a 245-space parking garage, and 3,600 square feet of ground-floor retail space.

The development is being built on the site of a former Kroger store at 6220 Guilford Avenue, just off of Broad Ripple's main strip.

Broad Ripple business owners express frustration at another construction project

Business owners in Broad Ripple are expressing frustration as the Indianapolis Department of Public Works prepares to start on a major new construction project even before wrapping up a lengthy road overhaul on the entertainment district's main strip that has drawn out well past the expected end date.

Business owners said they felt blindsided last week when they were told by city officials about the planned reconstruction of Westfield Boulevard bridge over the Indiana Central Canal—a $4.7 million project will require lane restrictions and a 100-day street closure. The meeting took place less than a week before the project began Monday and is expected to be completed by summer.

Numerous business owners contacted by IBJ don't dispute that the bridge, which DPW officials say is structurally sound but among the worst in the county, needs to be replaced. Where they take issue with the project is the timing—following a traffic-crippling reconstruction of Broad Ripple Avenue in the the core of the village—and what they contend is a lack of communication before the start.

Neighbors file suit to block proposed $61M Willows redevelopment

Neighbors of a proposed apartment and condominium project near Broad Ripple have filed a lawsuit in response to a city commission's decision last month to preliminarily approve the developer's request to rezone the land.

Four plaintiffs—Oxbow Estates Homeowners Association, Spirit Lake Co-owners Association and a pair of individuals with property abutting the project—filed suit late Friday in Marion County Superior Court.

The group opposes the $61 million Elements multifamily project planned by developers J.C. Hart Co. and Chase Development (both of which are named as defendants) to redevelop the Willows Event center at 6729 Westfield Blvd., into a 192-unit apartment community and 16 condominiums fronting Spirit Lake, north of Broad Ripple.

Developer, neighbors reach last-minute deal on $61M apartments project north of Broad Ripple

A Carmel-based development firm struck an 11th-hour deal on Monday with neighbors of an event venue just north of Broad Ripple to allow for the advancement of a proposed $61 million apartment project.

The agreement between J.C. Hart Co. and residents of the Oxbow Estates and Spirit Lake condominiums cleared the way for the City-County Council to unanimously approve a rezoning of the former Willows Event Center property at 6729 Westfield Blvd.

Under terms of the deal, the Elements project will include 168 apartments—a reduction from the proposal of 192 apartments and 16 town houses that was approved in December by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission. The project no longer includes condos or town houses, with a park now set to occupy two acres of the eight-acre property.
