Boone County looks to control growth in rural areas

Boone County is looking to control its destiny as the Indiana Economic Development Corp. plans the 9,000-acre LEAP Research and Innovation District northwest of Lebanon.

Over the course of three public meetings this year, county officials heard from residents who shared concerns about what the LEAP district and a growing Boone County mean for them, their farmland and their rural way of life.

In response to those worries, the Boone County Board of Commissioners in February will review a plan to create what is known as a zoning overlay district along major thoroughfares and across four key intersections in unincorporated areas of the central and western half of the county.

Study: Growing Boone County needs varied housing options

Boone County is growing, but the big questions are whether it's ready for that growth and how its communities need to prepare for the LEAP Research and Innovation District.

To find answers, the Boone County Economic Development Corp. commissioned a housing study and utility-needs analysis about a year ago.

Boone EDC Executive Director Molly Whitehead said she asked the consultants—Philadelphia-based Urban Partners and Indianapolis-based HWC Engineering—to forecast the county's population over the next quarter century and detail the housing impact.
