New Whitestown leaders prepare for next phase of town growth

Nearly seven months ago, the Whitestown Town Council made a choice to hit pause.

Council members let the town manager go, elected a new president and said they'd work on projects already in the works, but they would take a hiatus from approving anything new as the town awaited a new council.

Now, with less than a month to go before they take office Jan. 1, the five members of Whitestown's next town council—three new councilors and two who will start their first full terms—are preparing to get to work in Indiana's fastest-growing community.

Whitestown junkyard redevelopment proposal to face test

When Whitestown residents envision Maurer Commons, they see a development with a community center, recreational opportunities and green spaces. Those are all elements they say the fast-growing Boone County town lacks.

But when Indianapolis-based Milhaus LLC presented a plan in November for the initial phase of development on the site along Indianapolis Road, west of Interstate 65 and south of Exit 130, it included none of those amenities.

"We want more parks and recreational areas where we can be outside with our children," said Jennifer Knotts, a Whitestown resident who lives south of the Maurer Commons site. "There's not much around for us to be able to take our children out [to] unless we want to travel somewhere else."

Developers planning 188-unit apartment project in Whitestown

Two Indianapolis-based developers plan to build a 188-unit apartment complex near Interstate 65 in Whitestown.

Brown Capital Group LLC and Strategic Capital Partners LLC are preparing to develop a multifamily project called The Grove at 5875 Perry Worth Road, northwest of I-65's Exit 130, according to a news release.

The 277,000-square-foot development would consist of three buildings and a clubhouse with one-, two- and three-bedroom units ranging in size from 790 square feet to 1,415 square feet. Monthly rents would range from $1,400 to $2,100.
