Schaab Metals site sold to local developer Don Steininger

The former Schaab Metals site on Harrison Street, near the riverfront, will become a place for rooftop dining and e-sports, as envisioned by long-time developer Don Steininger.

Steininger is purchasing the site from the city at a cost of $250,000 with the promise of spending at least $5 million in "repurposing" the building. Unanimous approval came Monday at the Fort Wayne Redevelopment Commission meeting.

The 45,000 square foot building built in the early 20th century is an "absolutely crucial site," in the 1200 block of Harrison street, acquired this year by the Redevelopment Commission, said Joe Giant, redevelopment manager.

What can replace the Allen County Jail? Real estate developers in Fort Wayne see potential

The current Allen County Jail building sits in downtown Fort Wayne near Promenade Park and a newly constructed apartment complex.

Plans are underway to build a new jail located outside the downtown area in the future and developers in the city see the site as potential.

The question that county officials are still determining is whether to demolish the jail or reuse the space for something else. The county is still figuring out what the cost to demolish would be or how much it costs to renovate the interior of the building for other uses.

$17M secured for senior housing project in Fort Wayne

Financing is moving forward for a new affordable senior-serving property proposed in Fort Wayne.

Merchants Capital announced this week that it has secured $17.4 million in equity financing for the construction of Reserve on Park Place, which is expected to bring 187 age- and income-restricted housing units to the Fort Wayne area.

The financing comes as a part of the federal Low-Income Housing Tax Credit program for which Indiana awards were announced earlier this month.

Ivy Tech plans $60M in capital projects for Fort Wayne campus

The Ivy Tech Community College Board of Trustees on Thursday approved a $60 million capital improvement project on its Fort Wayne campus. The project includes a new nursing and health sciences facility, as well as renovations to college's Coliseum Campus.

The board voted to issue bonds up to $60 million to finance the project, which Ivy Tech President Sue Ellspermann said has been a capital priority for the college Board Chair Andrew Wilson said is being made possible because of Ivy Tech's strong financial position.

Plans call for the construction of a 50,000-square-foot nursing and health sciences facility that Ivy Tech said will help address a nursing shortage in the region.

New master plan seeks to boost tourism in Fort Wayne, Allen County

Officials in Allen County are looking at ways to boost tourism over the next decade. Visit Fort Wayne on Tuesday released its 10-year Tourism Master Plan, which was developed after a year-long effort that included input from residents and community stakeholders.

The official convention and visitors bureau for Fort Wayne and Allen County said the plan represents a blueprint to help the community serve as a catalyst for post-Covid recovery in the tourism industry and grow quality of life for residents in the county.

Jessa Campbell, director of destination development and communications for Visit Fort Wayne, told Inside INdiana Business the idea stemmed from the growth Fort Wayne has seen over the last decade.
